FIRST TRAINING on the Alternative Pathway
Intensive Pedagogical Training Institute
For career changers and content experts with a bachelor's degree who want to teach with an Alternative Resident Educator License in Ohio.
What Is the IPTI?
The Intensive Pedagogical Training Institute (IPTI) is the initial training on Ohio's alternative resident educator pathway. It is required to apply for a statement of eligibilty for a 2-year Alternative Resident Educator License. Cost is $575
IPTI is fully online and self-paced. You complete competency-based assessments — no timed exams, no class meetings. When you demonstrate mastery, you move on. After you successfully complete the IPTI, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion.
How IPTI Works
Register and pay
Create your account and complete registration. No application fee. Pay in full.
Complete the training
Work through the online assessments at your own pace. You have 20 weeks from your registration date.
Submit your assessments
Each competency is assessed through a written or practical submission. You may revise and resubmit until you demonstrate mastery.
Receive your IPTI Certificate of Completion
Once you’ve met all competencies, you’ll receive the IPTI Certificate of Completion.
What's Included

Every assessment is built around the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession — the same standards the state uses to evaluate licensed teachers
Classroom Field Experience
You will spend time in PreK–12 classrooms as part of the training, guided by an experienced mentor
Competency-Based, Not Seat-Time
There are no timed exams or mandatory log-in hours. You advance by demonstrating mastery, and you can revise and resubmit assessments
Fully Online, Any Schedule
No class meetings, no set hours. Study around your current job and family commitments
Up to One Year to Complete
Your registration period gives you up to twenty weeks to finish — no cohort deadlines, no term dates
Statement of eligibilty for a 2-year AREL
Completing the IPTI earns you the certificate to apply for the 2-year Alternative Resident Educator License (AREL)
Cost
Already have classroom experience in your content area, such as substitute teaching? Let us know, it may count toward the Field Experience requirement.
Registering over the summer? Line up a summer school field placement first, or wait until you have access to a classroom, because your registration clock starts on the day you pay.
Military service members and veterans may qualify for payment support through the State of Ohio. Please go to Ohio Military Veteran Educators Program Financial Resources.
The IPTI is a professional training, so it does not carry college credit or appear on a college transcript, and it does not qualify for federal financial aid. Many schools/school districts reimburse training like this. Ask your HR office.
